Details have just been announced of the 2009 Mayo News/Mayo Sports Partnership Team Challenge taking place as part of the Westport Festival of Sport Fun Day on Sunday August 23 at the Mall area in Westport. The challenge is in its fourth year and the organisers, Mayo Sports Partnership co-ordinator Charlie Lambert, GMIT lecturer in outdoor education Kevin O’Callaghan, and director of Achill Outdoor Adventure Centre Tim Daly, promise a challenging event full of fun and intrigue for all.

Westport Festival of Sport Fun Day organisers were the lucky winners of a free, live, nation-wide broadcast for their community event thanks to RTÉ 2fm and Kellogg’s Let’s Get Active. RTÉ 2fm’s Aidan Leonard will broadcast live to the nation from the active fun day on Sunday, 23 August between 2pm and 5pm.

European Mobility Week 2009 takes place from September 16 to 22 and the aim of the week is to encourage people in towns and cities all over Europe to get out of their cars and move to a more sustainable means of transport. This year, for the first time, Castlebar is participating in this exciting new project and it is hoped that the people of Castlebar will participate and really get behind this. “We're encouraging people to get out of their cars, and walk or cycle to work and school for this week and into the future,” said Noel Gibbons, Road Safety Officer with Mayo County Council.

Child Protection in Sport, Sports First Aid, Sports Leadership Training, and Disability Awareness Training are just some of the upcoming sports volunteer training courses which will be available through the partnership over the coming months. The AAI National Marathon Championships were incorporated in the 30th running of the Dublin City Marathon held on Bank Holiday Monday. The atmosphere was tremendous all along the streets of Dublin and Mayo AC runners in their highly visible red and green singlets experienced fantastic support. They ran in teams and as individuals and seven of the 16 athletes won medals - a wonderful haul. But as always, every finisher was a winner.

A 70 year-old Co Mayo man, who has coached 26 Olympic athletes in a glorious athletics career stretching over four decades, is to give an insight into preparation of top athletes in an informative and practical seminar.

The ninth and final race of the Vodafone C&C Cellular Mayo Road Race League takes place in Westport on Sunday December 27. It looks like being an exciting finale to another successful race series. Ninety eight men and 112 women athletes have won points in the eight races so far. The 2009 Race League has proved an excellent testing ground for the Fit4Life members who started their programme back in February. They have been training weekly at the five group sessions organised by clubs in conjunction with Mayo Sports Partnership. The Westport 5k will include a Fit4Life team challenge among the five groups.
